Tae Kwon Do



Tae Kwon Do is a martial art, originating from Korea, which uses punches, strikes, kicks and blocks for self defence. In that respect it shares similarities with other hand and foot fighting styles including Karate, Kickboxing, some Kung Fu styles etc. Tae Kwon Do literally means 'way of the foot and fist'. The TAGB



The association we belong to is the TAGB, which is short for 'Tae Kwon Do Association of Great Britain'. The TAGB is Europe's largest single martial arts organisation, it was formed in 1983 and now has nearly 20,000 members and over 450 clubs. Belonging to a large and established Tae Kwon Do organisation has many benefits, including:
  • experienced instructors and high standards
  • a carefully worked-out teaching syllabus
  • numerous clubs nationwide
  • popular, busy and high quality competition circuit

The TAGB's sparring rules are influenced by light-contact and semi-contact fighting systems. This means that TAGB sparring makes more use of both hands and feet, which is different to the Olympic Tae Kwon Do sparring you may have seen on TV (which places more emphasis on feet e.g. no punching to the head).

The instructor



Kam Patel, born in 1964, has over 25 years of experience in Tae Kwon Do. Kam achieved his 4th degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do in 2005, which makes him an internationally recognised instructor.

The clubs



Kam is the main instructor for three TAGB clubs in the midlands area, Leicester Belgrave, Northampton North and Northampton South. For more information about locations and training times for these clubs, click on the appropriate website menu buttons at the top left of this page.
